Oolong tea health benefits

What is Oolong tea?

Like any other teas, oolong tea is made of camellia sinensis plant. The main difference from them is harvesting and processing method. Oolong tea falls somewhere in between black and green tea with oxidation rate about 10-90%. It can be almost completely or slightly oxidized. Full oxidation makes it look and taste more like black tea with deep and rich flavor, while slight one is close to green tea. Oolong tea taste may vary from ripe fruit to caramel, floral, cinnamon, or toasted bread notes. This tea type usually comes from such countries as China, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Japan, and others.

Oolong tea health benefits

1. Promotes heart health

Chinese scientists conducted research to identify patterns between drinking oolong tea and cholesterol levels. High cholesterol levels are considered to increase the risk of heart disease. People who consumed at least 300 ml of oolong tea per week had lower cholesterol levels than those who didn’t drink it at all.

2. Aids loss of weight

Study conducted out on 102 obese patients shown the following results. 70% of patients lost 1 kg in 6 weeks of daily oolong tea drinking, while 22% lost about 3 kg. It is due to the fact that drinking this tea can increase energy expenditure and fat oxidation by up to 12%.

3. Protects brain and improves its work

Consuming 3 cups of oolong tea every day can reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, and other neurodegenerative diseases. It also improves brain activity due to the amino acid called L-theanine. This amino acid also improves sleep quality and reduces stress and anxiety.

4. Prevents diseases

We have already mentioned diseased connected with brain work. Apart from them, oolong tea may lower the risk of ischemic stroke. According to the studies, drinking 3 cups of oolong tea per day were lowers the risk of ischemic stroke by up to 20%. Polyphenols in this tea can inhibit breast, ovarian and other cancer cells growth.

5. Promotes bone and tooth strength

It happens due to antioxidants in oolong tea that may help keep your teeth and bones strong. One study showed that people who oolong tea on a daily basis during a 10-year period had 2% higher overall bone mineral density.
