Black tea health benefits

Black tea is one of the most popular and consumed beverages in the world. As any other tea variety, it comes from Camellia sinensis plant, but features of harvesting and processing differ it from others. Read on to find out more about what is black tea and what are its health benefits.

What is black tea?

The leaves after being harvested from Camellia sinensis plant go through such processes as wilting, bruising, rolling, and oxidation. They are oxidized when the tea leaves are left to expose to the air for a long time. When enzymes break down the chemicals in them, they produce brown or black color and particular smell.

1. Can help to reduce the risk of cancer

Polyphenols in black tea may slow down the development of particular types of cancer and lead to the death of cancer cell. Several researches proved that drinking black tea is associated with a lower risk of oral cancer, cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, ovaries, breasts, and lungs.

2. Promotes heart health

Black tea contains such group of antioxidants as flavonoids that benefit heart health. The research paper called “Green and black tea consumption and risk of stroke: a meta-analysis” has a proof for it. People who drink 3 or more cups of black tea per day had a 21% lower risk of a stroke than people who consume less than 1 cup.

3. Reduces blood pressure

The results of a 2015 study suggested that black tea can reduce diastolic and systolic blood pressure. Consuming this tea types also appeared to cancel out the influence of a high fat meal on blood pressure.

4. Can regulate blood sugar levels

Black tea is a non-sweetened beverage, and it is suggested that this tea type can help enhance insulin in human body. One research showed that drinking black tea helped increase insulin activity by more than 13 folds. Another study in mice showed that green tea and black tea helped lower blood sugar levels.

5. Can improve gut health

The polyphenols in black tea can help maintain a healthy gut by promoting the growth of good bacteria and restraining the growth of bad bacteria. Moreover, black tea may contain antimicrobial properties that kill off harmful compounds and improve immunity by helping repair the lining of the digestive tract.
